Pressure kept on young crims By Andrew King A POLICE crackdown on the top 10 youth offenders in northwest suburbs recovered stolen property in a raid on Friday. A search warrant was issued to look for stolen property at a Bryndwr address from two burglaries in Papanui and the theft of a mountain bike from a school. A 13-year-old suspect has been
identified, and $3550 worth of property recovered. Inquiries into his involvement are on-going, no charges have been laid so far. It is part of an operation, code named Piper, that targets the top 10 youth believed to be responsible for burglaries, thefts, vandalism and graffiti, intimidation and other offending. All 10 have been spoken to
since the operation started in September. Acting Sergeant Nick Adcock said the raid on Friday shows the initiative is working and it is making a few young criminals think twice before they act. “This is an excellent result as we are continuing to identify and deal with offences caused by our local youth. With focus on our most prolific youth offenders we are preventing further
offending,” he said. He said seven of the 10 top offenders have been dealt with for offending with various degrees of seriousness. He said he couldn’t comment on the specifics but the offences ranged from burglary, aggravated robbery and trespasses. “We currently have two in youth custody, one has moved to be with family in Wellington, one has been removed from
the list as there has been no offending for some time,” he said. Operation Piper is based from the Papanui police station and is aimed at giving opportunities to break a cycle of crime. It’s part of a wider focus throughout northern and eastern suburbs to reduce youth crime and as part of the national goal to reduce it 25 per cent by June.
Basketballer heads for new heights Former Burnside High School student Toby Gillooly has secured a four-year basketball scholarship at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas. The 18-year-old, who recently finished his final year of secondary school, has been a standout player for Burnside and Canterbury age group teams in recent years. Gillooly was also part of the Canterbury Rams team that finished at the top of the round-robin in last year’s National Basketball League. He leaves for the United States next week and will compete for New Mexico in the NCAA Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. News Garden in danger of closing By Andrew King A GARDEN that feeds and entertains families in Bryndwr could be a thing of the past if they do not find a fresh crop of volunteers. The garden was the brainchild of Bryndwr residents in 2010 and created in spring 2012 as a way to get to know who is in the community and grow healthy, organic food. But now they need “as many volunteers” as they can get to keep the garden, and all the events that have been associated with it. Currently there is about nine volunteers but some are moving away and if they don’t find more, it will not be able to continue. “Heaps of families from around the community use this garden and come to the events, but without more help, we will have to stop running them,” said Bryndwr Community Garden events co-ordinator Martin Rule. For the past few years the garden has hosted a Christmas party where kids can go along and get a present, have some food and learn a bit about their neighbourhood as well as a Halloween party and family day – all alcohol and smoke-free.

Mr Rule said they do not want to start charging for the events as it would defeat the purpose of a community garden. “It is bigger than a garden,” he said. He said people know each other better, the kids are safer

FUNDING GRANTED The Fendalton-WaimairiHarewood Community Board has approved funding for five north-west students to attend competitions and camps overseas. Daniel Chiplin was granted $400 towards participating in the Peewee International Ice Hockey Friendship Tournament in Minnesota in March. Amy Weaver, Grace Northern and Paige Bowman were granted $350 each towards their gymnastics development tour to Texas, in February. Laura Duncan was granted $500 towards a gymnastic training camp in South Essex, England, in April.

Missing war medals still a mystery By Andrew King WELL-KNOWN rugby league identity Bill Whitehead’s war medals are still missing in action. Mr Whitehead, of Bishopdale, approached Nor’West News about 12 months ago to try and locate his Queen’s Service Medal and Defence Service Medal. But he is yet to hear anything about them. He gave them to a friend, but cannot remember who. They had planned to combine the medals together. The friend noticed the medals sitting on the top of Mr Whitehead’s cabinet, and said they knew “a place that could connect those together.” “I can’t for the life of me remember who it was,” Mr Whitehead said. He said he wanted to hand them on to his “heirs” and is asking anyone who may know something about the medals to get in contact. War historian Alan Polaschek said he does most of the work on medals in Canterbury, but had not seen Mr Whitehead’s medals. Coupland’s Bakeries managing director Lance Coupland presented the keys to a new Volkswagen Polo to Louisa Sinclair, the winner of a Coupland’s competition. While Mrs Sinclair, 34, described the win as an “amazing Christmas present,” she will be trading in the car valued at $25,000 to support a trip to her homeland, Northern Ireland, next April. Living in Dunedin for the past seven years, Mrs Sinclair, her husband and two daughters will travel to Bangor for the first time since she moved to New Zealand. Mrs Sinclair won the competition through Coupland’s Bakeries at Andersons Bay, South Dunedin. Plea to stop state housing sell-off By Andrew King “LEAVE US alone, we have been through enough.” That is the message Bryndwr residents want to send the Government about selling off state houses. In November, minister responsible for Housing New Zealand Bill English said the Government would look to sell up to 2500 state houses in Christchurch as part of its selloff programme. A petition has been started by Housing New Zealand tenant
Gail Scott and other Bryndwr residents Marney Ainsworth, Paul Pink and Nae Nae Higgs to try and block the sale. A meeting discussing the up-coming sale will be held at St Aidan’s Anglican Church on Wednesday at 7.30pm. “We don’t want another landlord,” Ms Scott said. The houses are in Bryndwr, Shirley and Riccarton. She hoped people living in the affected houses would speak up and try to stop the sell-off. “There is a fear of being evicted if they speak up, but it
is freedom of speech, they can’t be kicked out for that,” Ms Scott said. Former Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett said the Government’s expectation in an ownership transfer is that any community housing provider must show it can improve the quality of services to tenants. “As we have said of other transfers, our bottom line is that tenant rights will remain the same and tenants will continue to be housed for the duration of their need,” she said. She said any successful bidder

will enter a 25-year contract with the Ministry of Social Development to provide housing places. Housing New Zealand owns 358 properties in the Bryndwr area, including the house that was once home to former prime minister John Key. The petition will run “as long as necessary,” according to Ms Scott. An information pack has been released to potential providers and those interested will be invited to a market sounding session with Treasury.

Retired coroner gets new year honour By Georgia O’Connor-Harding TWENTY-ONE YEARS of investigating deaths has led to retired coroner Richard McElrea being recognised on the New Year Honours List. Mr McElrea, 72, of Fendalton, who was instrumental in establishing the Coroners’ Council in 1998, was awarded the Companion of the Queen’s Service Order. He said it was a privilege to work as a coroner, and he was lucky enough to have worked in both the old and the new coroner system which was established in 2007. Born in Dunedin, Mr McElrea attended Otago Boys’ High School before going on to gain a Bachelor of Arts at Otago University and a law degree at Canterbury University. He became a partner at law firm Duncan Cotterill in 1970 before being appointed a coroner for the Canterbury region in 1994. “It wasn’t something I always thought I would go into but it is just an opportunity that arose and I have had the privilege of having two careers in the law,” he said. In 1998, Mr McElrea helped

Former Burnside basketball guard makes jump to US By Gordon Findlater TOBY GILLOOLY is the latest Canterbury basketballer to secure a United States college scholarship after a standout secondary school spell with Burnside High School. In 2016, Gillooly averaged 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists per game, while shooting 57 per cent from the field for his school. The 18-year-old will head to New Mexico Highlands University next week to begin a four-year scholarship. Gillooly made the decision to join the university after visiting New Mexico late last year. “The coach was it for me, he seemed like a really enthusiastic and smart coach. I really like where the basketball programme is heading and I feel like I’ll be able to fit in well straight away,” said Gillooly. The 193cm guard is the second Christchurch basketballer in a week to announce he has a college scholarship. Last week, Christchurch Boys’ High School’s Quinn Clinton revealed he will play for the University of New Mexico. Clinton was the standout player in last year’s local secondary school competition, with many viewing Gillooly as the competition’s second most valuable player.

Only 90 minutes on the road will separate the two, with Gillooly based in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Clinton in Albuquerque, New Mexico. “We’re really good mates off the court. We will actually play each other in pre-season and it will be really cool having (Clinton) just down the road,” Gillooly said. He has been part of the Mainland Eagles Academy for the past two years and played for the Canterbury Rams under coach Mark Dickel in 2016. “(Gillooly) has earned this opportunity. His new coach Craig Snow is getting a player who can
play right away. Toby is a winner,” said Dickel. New Mexico Highlands University competes in the NCAA Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Last season, they finished with a 12-8 record in the conference and a 14-14 record overall. A number of current Australian National Basketball League players have competed in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, including Mark Worthington, David Barlow, Jesse Wagstaff, Mitch McCarron and Nicholas Kay. Gillooly leaves for New Mexico on Sunday.

Heap has perfect build up to Chch ITF tournament By Gordon Findlater DYLAN HEAP will go into next week’s Christchurch International Tennis Federation tournament on a high. The 16-year-old has done the double, capturing his second straight age group national tennis title in a marathon final at Wilding Park last week. Heap, who plays his club tennis for Waimairi, was made to go the distance in the 16 and under New Zealand Junior Championships final, which lasted two and a half hours on Friday. Heap took the first set against Hutt Valley’s George Stoupe in comfortable fashion 6-2. The second set was a different story with Stoupe fighting back to take it 6-4. The third and final set went the distance with a tie-breaker required after the scores were locked at six a piece. Not even the tie-breaker could be decided easily as Heap won it narrowly 9-7 to complete a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7) victory. Later in the tournament, Heap teamed up with his Junior Davis Cup teammate Macsen Sisam to also win the doubles title with a 6-3, 6-4 win over William Brownlie and Stoupe.

News Crummer looking Annie Crummer found fame with hits such as Language and See What Love Can Do. She spoke to Tom Doudney about working on new material and seeing dyslexia as a blessing, ahead of her performance with Debbie Harwood, Margaret Urlich and Sharon O’Neill at Lincoln’s Selwyn Sounds concert in March IT HAS been a long time since we’ve heard anything new from Annie Crummer but the singer is hopeful her fans won’t have to wait too much longer. Crummer hasn’t released a full album of original material since 1996’s Seventh Wave. Since then fans have had to make do with a best of collection in 2002 and three songs released in 2010 as singles only. While she is reluctant to talk about release dates, she has been working on songs for an album which has a working title of Project Annie C. “I have got a bunch of

songs that I am dying to get out of the demo situation and get into the studio and smash that stuff out, I’m the only one stopping me,” she said. “I’ve got a lot more to say musically, I will just have to get over myself and get on with it.” Crummer said that while she was known more as a singer than a songwriter, she had become more confident dabbling in song writing. “Melodies come really good to me but the way I write lyrics is quite odd because I am fully dyslexic so the way I explain things, I
don’t think it’s the same as a non-dyslexic song writer.” Crummer only discovered she was dyslexic well into her adult years but the revelation came as a big relief. “When I look back I think: ‘Oh, I have been blessed with dyslexia, that’s all.’ I just learn things differently,” she said. “I forgave myself for feeling so dumb all these years because I left school really early and now when I look back at all the subjects I took it had nothing to do with anything technical, it all had to do with creative stuff.”

That ability to recognise patterns helped her land a leading role in the Australian version of Ben Elton’s hit musical-theatre production We Will Rock You, based on the songs of British rock band Queen, in 2003. To get the part of Killer Queen, Crummer had to audition in front of Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. “I had to learn the English phonetically and that is actually how I learn music too, I listen to where heart is needed and where anger is needed and all the emotions, I just emulate those inflections without really knowing what I am talking about, but I have just fooled everyone,” she said. “I can’t believe I got that role, if only they knew how I did it. But it did catch up on me a couple of times on stage where I’d fumble over a word because I didn’t fully understand it and I had to dig my way out of it, live.” She said that while the way dyslexic people figured things out

have the utmost respect for each other so it’s a joy all round, a real buzz.” The concert will also feature Kiwi rock heavyweights Mi-Sex, Dragon, The Jordan Luck Band and Jason Kerrison. When she was not performing with Harwood and co or going solo, she often joined her father’s band, Will Crummer and the Rarotongans, playing songs which mostly sung in Cook Island Maori. Crummer took a more low key role in the band, playing the pahu and putting in some occasional backing vocals. pressure! Blood Pressure is an indicator of cardiovascular as well as overall health. Healthy blood flow is vital for a healthy body as the blood plasma transports nutrients, hormones, metabolic waste, oxygen and CO2 throughout the body. An area in the brain keeps check on blood flow to ensure health of all cells and the organs they make up. If blood flow is reduced the brain will try to normalise blood flow by adjusting the heart strength, frequency (Pulse Rate) as well as the width of blood vessels all via the nervous system. Over a period of time the blood pressure may keep increasing due to the deterioration of blood flow. A higher B/P is not ideal and is considered a major risk factor for strokes, aneurysm, organ failure and heart failure. Even moderate elevation of B/P is considered a major reason for shorter life expectancy. If we can maintain our B/P in the normal range our overall health will be improved. Systolic B/P (The upper figure) is when the heart contracts and pushes blood around the body. Ideally at rest this should be between 100 to 120. The diastolic B/P (The lower figure) is the pressure in the
arteries between beats and ideally at rest this should be between 60 to 70. It has been found in around 90% of cases high blood pressure is caused by an increase in the resistance to blood flow in the blood vessels. It is believed inflammation and stiffness of the blood vessels are major reasons for this increased resistance.
